Bhavans Vidya Mandir at Harvard Model United Nations 2017, Boston

Great opportunities seldom come without our seeking them, but such a rarity did become a reality when the students of Bhavans Vidya Mandir, Elamakkara were invited to represent their school in the sixty fourth session of Harvard Model United Nations 2017 (HMUN) held at Boston from 26th to 29th January 2017.  3500 high school students from all around the world participated in thirty one committees at the largest iteration of HMUN ever.   The students of Bhavans Vidya Mandir, were assigned to represent the country Mongolia in the General Assembly, namely, Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee, World Health Organisation, the UN Legal Committee, World Trade Organization and the World Conference on Women.   As a simulation of the UN, this conference provided the students an opportunity to both replicate the work of the UN and try to find solutions to the problems faced by the international community from their own unique perspective.  Throughout the span of the conference, the students developed their negotiation skills and learned the importance of cooperation and the need to reach a consensus.  The overall experience was immensely enriching, both in terms of gaining knowledge as well as making friends from all over the world. A truly immersive experience was the visit to the United Nations Headquarters at New York wherein students were also able to get an up-close look at the diplomatic workings of the youth forum which was held in the now defunct Trusteeship Council.  Another highlight was the interactive session with Ian Vasquez, the director of the Cato’s Institute’s Centre for Global Liberty and Prosperity.  The tour of the US also included visits to the White House, Capitol Hill, Lincoln Memorial and the Korean Memorial in Washington DC.  The tour came to an end with a visit to the Smithsonian Institution.  At the Air and Space museum, the students were inspired by the vast collection aviation and space artefacts and that man’s conquest of air and space is only limited by his imagination.  The Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, with its green dome and immense size with 126 million natural science specimens and cultural artefacts was a sight to behold.  The educational philosophy at the core of this entire trip is the personal connection between the students and their experiences which is more than just learning facts and figures.
